Pickleball Levels
Traene pickleball skill levels are based on the below descriptors. The better a player gets at these facets, the higher their skill level. The key to improving a skill level is shot selection and consistency, limiting unforced errors, court positioning, resetting and defense.
1. Consistent Basics
Serves & Returns: Land serves/returns consistently with good depth and avoid errors.
Rallies: Sustain medium-to-long rallies and control the pace and direction of shots.
2. Court Awareness & Strategy
The Kitchen (NVZ): Move to kitchen line and feel comfortable engaging in dink rallies.
Teamwork: Understand court positioning and cover the court well with a partner.
Defense: Ability to defend hard shots without leading to easy opponent points.
3. Areas for Improvement (Bridge to Advanced)
Shot Selection: Refine when to play a soft game (dinks/drops) and hard game (drives).
Patience: Avoid speeding up the ball at the wrong time, resulting in unforced errors.
Advanced Mechanics: Learn to consistently hit sharp angles and put-away shots.
BEGINNER (2.0):
BEGINNER players are learning basic rules and developing fundamental strokes. They struggle with shot consistency and have a tendency to stay at the baseline. Serves/returns lack depth/pace. They use a basic forehand but avoid, or mis-hit, the backhand. A BEGINNER steps into the kitchen and tends to smash shots rather than hit soft "dink" shots. They can sustain short rallies with players of similar ability but lack control over ball placement.
INTERMEDIATE (2.5):
INTERMEDIATE players have a solid grasp of rules and fundamental strokes. They sustain slightly longer rallies, are more consistent and commit fewer unforced errors than a beginner.
ADVANCED (3.0):
ADVANCED players sustain onger rallies and use more advanced strategy. Shot consistency is higher, they commit fewer unforced errors, understand the soft game (dinks/drops) and have a higher defense success rate.
ADVANCED PLUS (3.5):
ADVANCED PLUS players sustain longer rallies, are more consistent and commit fewer unforced errors. They understand how to control the speed of a point (resetting) and can turn defense into offense at the kitchen line. They have more control of shot placement.
HIGH LEVEL (4.0+):
HIGH LEVEL players sustain long rallies, are more consistent and commit fewer unforced errors. They play a fast/slow game with defense that offsets an opponents’ offense on a regular basis. They can control the speed of the point (consistent resetting) and turn defense into offense at
the kitchen line. With more control of shot placement, they’re able to drive/drop/dink and plan a shot sequence to produce winning points.
